History of Kyrenia Castle-cyprus

However, the excavations show that the original castle was fortified by the Byzantines in the seventh century AD to protect against the Arab domination raids.King Richard the Lionheart was not received in Cyprus, so he sold the island to the Knights Templar, who in turn sold it to Guy de Lusignan king consort. Thus, Cyprus was under Frankish rule for almost 300 years (1192-1489). The castle, which originally was very small, was expanded and strengthened between 1208 and 1211 by King John Lusignan lbeli D '.

During this period, Byzantine fortifications were reproduced and therefore a new entrance, horseshoe and square towers, gaps arrow, the guards of the rooms and added to the dungeons of the castle. It was well used as a place of refuge in times of war and as a place of recration in peacetime.
