Coast Guard Contract Awarded to Encompix Erp Boating Customer

Encompix (www.encompix.com) a business unit of Made2Manage Systems, has filled the manufacturing software requirements of engineer-to-order companies since 1992. Encompix customer Kvichak Marine Industries Inc. will share with a Wisconsin company a multi-year U.S. Coast Guard contract that could be worth up to a total of $600 million.

Seattle-based Kvichak, which builds high-speed aluminum boats, will share the contract with the Manitowoc Co. (NYSE: MTW) of Manitowoc, Wis., to build up to 250 Response Boat-Medium (RB-M) vessels. The boats are expected to be delivered beginning in the first half of 2008.

“This is far and away the largest contract award our company has ever seen,” said Brian Thomas, COO, Kvichak Marine. “We are thrilled to be the recipient and looking forward to it. I think we’re up to it.”

The RB-Ms will replace the Coast Guard’s original fleet of 208 41-foot utility boats, which entered service in 1973.

What are the pros and cons of joining the Coast Guard?

My son is graduating in December with a bachelor's degree in information services. His interest is in computer forensics. It is considering the Coast Guard after graduation. Is it likely that he would be able to work in their chosen field when he enlisted in the Coast Guard? What are the risks of recruitment? If most people who have joined happy, or do many regrets? If he enlisted, is typical of negotiating an agreement with the recruiter? If so, what are the typical negotiations?

Most people entering any branch of the armed forces are happy with that choice. USCG has a number associated with computing, information systems technician or IT, for short.
