Command and Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath
There’s an undeniable appeal to the solidity on offer in Command and Conquer 3. It has that chunky and WHIRR-CLUNK feel we’ve come to expect. It might be intentionally dumb, and overly reliant on a template for RTS gaming that’s now over 10 years old, but it still works.
Command and Conquer hums along like a well lubricated, crudely-supercharged engine, and you can’t help enjoying yourself. So it’s with a sense of inevitability that I judge this expansion to be not that great, safe in the knowledge that hardly anyone will care.
Command and Conquer fans are going to buy this whatever we say about it, and they probably won‘t be all that disappointed.
The basic expanse of the expansion is delivered in a new single player campaign. This spans a great swathe of NOD vs GDI backstory designed to tell us a little more about Kane’s exploits and what happened in the gaps that other games haven’t quite filled in yet. In this regard it feels like the kind of add-on that has been produced purely to exploit over-attentive fans.
The story itself is remarkable in its lack of humor: previous Command and Conquer games seem to have at least been vaguely aware how their pomp and circumstance made things outrageous and silly, but here there’s barely a raised eyebrow: they’re deadly serious. This would be okay if the missions weren’t delivered one after the other, and each one utterly scripted and lamentably predictable – Kane’s Wrath really is real-time strategy level design by numbers. Admittedly, that doesn’t result in unplayable ugliness, but we’ve been getting used to being offered some rather impressive strategy scenarios in the past couple of years, and this campaign simply feels a little deflated.
Got a present for Ya
Kane’s Wrath does nicely ramp up when the new units are finally introduced. There’s some really entertaining moments where the epic tanks and death-robots are unveiled, which is as it should be. Successfully hitting the hyperbolic high notes is what a silly science fiction RTS should really be doing at every step.
Anyway, what’s rather more interesting and ambitious is the global conquest mode. It’s not dissimilar to the War of The Ring mode in Battle For Middle Earth, or Empire At War’s conquest mode, where you essentially bolster strongholds and beef up armies in a turn-based fashion, to go forth and take on the map as a whole. Individual battles are fought in classic RTS fashion, but starting conditions and units on the field are determined by how you’ve played the strategic-level conquest map game. The entire system does feel rather unbalanced, however, as it’s all too easy to lose your grip on this meta-game and get totally pummeled by your opponent. I’d like to see it tweaked and refined (the map, as it stands, is rubbish in comparison to the Universe At War global game, for example) in a future Command and Conquer outing.
Flak Attack
We can finish up by saying that although this game does add new units to play with and provides a few more hours of campaigning, and a totally new way of stringing together skirmishes in the conquest mode, it nevertheless feels a little exhausted.
The classic storytelling cutscenes are missing any of their previous verve, and the new game elements don’t add a whole lot to the original palette of bombast and explosions that Command and Conquer 3 had already provided. I can imagine that this expansion is going to be essential for those of you who regularly like to lock horns in multiplayer battles, but for those of us who haven’t got Command and Conquer tattoos, it hardly makes for an essential purchase.

Would you continue to battle Cobra Commander, Duke, or John Kerry? Why is that?
Yah, I know that you have no idea who Cobra Commander or Duke's. Just answer, I'm bored. Yup, the Duke. Cobra Ol 'Commander is a former used car salesman who built a terrorist org that ITT owned island itself.
Duke – He's a winner. Although I felt he was too Goody Two Shoes. But there was a hell of a support team. Cobra Commander was a bit manic depressive too. Always with a smile, then anger. John Kerry – I'm not with everything I did but I hate the line of thought. At least Cobra Commander had no regrets and everything left on the table. I think I have to go with Duke. That carrier was impressive and I think I might have a chance with Scarlett or J. The alternative would be Lady or Baroness Teresa Kerry …
