Buick Grand National
It seems deceptive. Locked under the signature of the demure Buick Grand National black body wrapped hid a turbocharged V6 ready to fly away casually arrogant any opponent who dared to step on the pedal. He was a true American muscle car, and is now a cult favorite among collectors and enthusiasts. Here's a look at greatness.
The Takeover
The Chrysler Corporation, the parent company of Buick used to show his prowess of the car, and designed the Grand National Buick with gentle style but injects a beam of torque and horsepower under the hood. Inserted in 1982 as a subset of the Buick Regal, the model – named for the Grand National NASCAR Winston Cup racing series – are 215 owners of their first year. After a hiatus of one year, the model returned in 1984 with its all black color scheme, chrome wheels, and the recognized electronic injection gasoline, 3.8 liter, 200 horsepower turbocharged V6. That year, 2000 Grand Nationals in the street. It was the beginning of a legend.
The Sleeping Giant Awakens
In 1986 and '87, Buick decided to perfect his deceptively mild sleeping giant in the future. After adding an intercooler in 1986 and set the engine in 1987, Buick has created a strong beast capable of dramatically underestimated 245-hp and 355 lb-ft of torque (fuel efficiency was not terrible, estimated at 17/25). Leaving the assembly line, easily took the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Corvette and other Pony "cars." Hazelbacker Joseph goes so far as to say that cars could only serial competing were the Ferrari 308 GTS Luxury Lamborghini Jalpa P350 GTS, like the Buick Grand National hit 145 mph speeds past.
Roaring Out of Existence
1987 was, unfortunately, the last model year. Instead of going quietly, it roared out of existence, in the same way as it had arrived. Buick introduced the Grand National GNX, valued at $ 29,000. Only 547 were ever. Built with a single turbo, the GNX out 276 horses and shovels 360 pounds feet of tire shredding torque. The initial torque level was so great that Buick engineers had to modify the rear axle and transmission, so as not to crumple under the strain. Tagged as the "Grand National to end all Grand Nationals "of Buick, and" vehicle of Darth Vader "by a Car Driver and shameless, the GNX criticized the performance out of the water above. Through a variety of engine modifications, was capable of accelerating past 160 miles per hour, but was limited electronically to 124 mph. Were fired from 0-to-60 mph in 4.7 seconds a blistering. Buick said it was the fastest production model of its time.
A glorious symbol
Despite their grandiose claims of glory, however, is a quiet protected. The Grand National, unlike the Ford Mustang, Dodge Challenger and Chevy Corvette, has never enjoyed pop culture fanaticism these other muscle cars daily delight. It was perhaps the angular distance and style, rather than the belligerent attitude of the Camaro and charger, which distanced the Grand National from its competitors. However, for those who know that old age is a true American muscle. Raw, powerful and with an attitude clandestine defines the pioneering spirit and influence of a time when gas was cheap, the cars were quick, and the muscle in.
