Help with my photography beginners please?

I am a beginner to photography and just bought a film SLR in which to learn the foundations and building a portfolio. I want to focus on dark, brooding gothic scenes such as castles and ruins of the cathedral at sunset, storm clouds, furious sea, deep shadows (both in rural and urban environments) and the thunder and lightning. Is there something I need to get to grips with considering my subject material? Moreover, as blacks and grays are predominant, it is worth me buying the movie in color? Note how the transition from an exterior and interior environments with this Gothic, somber feel to be the only common factor. As an aside, what else I can include in a portfolio that is maintained with this character, but maybe add a bit more lively if the album is seen as too sad or dull? Thanks! Oh and I forgot about the forest, if this is important, in winter forest, and under the canopy without light! Thanks
