A quality suit that will last and maintain its integrity over time is one of the smartest investments a man can make. How we dress is not only an expression of who we are and where we stand in our lives, but it also influences to a large degree how others perceive us. A sharply dressed man is a treated differently in most situations. There will always be things you can t change about yourself, but your style of dress and the attentivness you invest in it, is one department where you can have the greatest power and influence.

An essential part of dressing well, is knowing when and where to adorn certain attire. Even if you don t wear a suit to work on a regular basis, there is no lack of opportunity to wear one at other times. As long as your suit is well tailored and you are comfortable in it, you shouldn t worry too much about fitting in a particular environment.

Concerts, plays, and art exhibits are always safe bets to wear a suit. You can also create Your Own opportunities as well— you re never too old to play dress up. Put on your nicely tailored suit and spend an hour at a small café, while reading or writing. As a social experiment, wear your suit to an upscale shop and compare the level of service you enjoy to those occasions you are dressed more casually.

For anyone who hasn’t bought a suit before, the experience can be akin to ordering in a French bistro and then waiting in suspense to see what you ll end up eating! If you re going to lay out hundreds of dollars for a suit, it is prudent to enter into the equation with a solid idea of what you want, need, and should expect.

If your answer is for the office, then you might consider a nice gray pin-stripe, which you more than likely wouldn’t choose if your purpose for buying the suit is to go out on the town. Usage dictates these details. Although pinstripes are being accepted as more versatile they have traditionally conveyed more of a corporate image. You can never go wrong with a navy blue or charcoal grey suit. They are both versatile as well as classic.

The single most important factor in choosing your suit is the fit. This is first and foremost. You can spend $2,000 on a top designed suit, but if it doesn’t fit properly, you d might as well wear it to wash your car. Sleek fit on the body is essential.

The department store salesman will tell you everything that is currently in style looks great on you, and that a tailor can fix and fine tune anything. For that reason alone you need to know as much as possible about how a suit should fit. You might look fine in it when you try it on in the store, but then later find it uncomfortable to sit in. The key is to allow your own unique build to dictate the structure of the suit. This will guarantee you ll look your very best.

The suit should fit perfectly everywhere and above all, you should feel comfortable wearing it. In fact, it is the apparent comfort of the person wearing the suit that makes a suit look so sharp.
