Picking a dog by the tail?

I do not know if anyone else here watches The Westminster Kennel Club dog show. I caught the tail "end" no pun! In the category of Terrier, the drivers were picking up the dogs under the chin and tail. I've seen all year, but never think twice. Now these drivers in this caliber are the best in the world and very well paid, and obviously know what they are doing. Anyone out there know why do that?? I am sure that is a technical reasoning behind it, but I'm not sure.

Many terriers are bred to hunt rodents and other vermin "" Underground burrow that. It has grown up in having the size and shape have tails, with a specialized muscle that should be "trapped" underground, which can be removed safely by the tail .. I imagine that the drivers are lifting to see that they are able to do that from the breed standard.
