A Brief History of Coffee Tables

The history of coffee tables goes back to the late 18th century during the Victorian era. During this period, were actually used for making cups of tea, as it was the rigors of time drinking at the height of fashion – every one drank tea. This led to a growing demand tea table. This was generally higher than today's pictures hanging on coffee, however, as time progressed and as the high-backed sofas that were so popular in the second half of the seventeenth century were replaced by low back sofas, which we know as coffee tables were in use. These tables have been designed specifically to be in the back of the sofa, and is used for books, candles and coffee or tea.

The same tables first to be called as such were designed in Britain. These were built of wood. Again, these were generally greater than our contemporary coffee tables. The low height influence may have arisen almost floor level with Japanese tables Table Ottoman style tea gardens. Coffee tables, below, are a relatively new invention.

The coffee table made with the increasing availability of materials and the increase in mass production and therefore affordability. As a result of the industrial revolution, manufacturing of wooden furniture was eventually industrialized. During the Arts and Crafts movement in Britain, there was a desire to restore handcrafted furniture, in particular, the individual style of the artisans. During the modern era, which emerged from the Arts & Crafts, a variety of styles emerged. The coffee tables in this period were kept away from ornamental motifs so favored by the Victorians, but clean lines, simple and emphasis on natural forms is encouraged.

Art Deco combined points contrasting inspiration, artists of the era were influenced by primitivism and modern technology, such as aircraft and locomotives. The followers of the movement adhered to the geometric shapes and curves and straight lines, more in tune with the machine age. Coffee tables of this was to use formica laminate, which was discovered at that time. In the design, tend to be simple and streamlined.

The Bauhaus movement, which emerged from Germany valued purity of form. It is often used in glass and steel works.
