Can you tint bricks to be a different color?
I have a Red Brick fireplace in my home, but I think they’d look a lot better in a sand color, since I live in the desert and all. How can I change the color without sacrificing the texture, and without making it look unnatural?
I have used min wax oil based stains on fireplaces many times.
If you go over your existing brick with a stain only, you will not get the red tones out.
To go lighter. Paint the brick with an oil based primer. When dry paint the brick with a semi- gloss or eggshell paint of your choice. A good neutral is Navajo White ( sherwin Williams color).
This alone may be the look you are going for. You will need to seal it with a polyurethane.
If you want to go a step further and add a min wax oil based stain
( such as Provencal or special walnut) as a “glaze” over the base color…it will settle on all of the cracks and reveals. I have done this for many clients and they love it.
It will take quite a while (a day) for the stain to dry, but the end result is a very durable finish. No sealer is needed.
Get some brick and some colors and make yourself some samples first.
