Racing Lego Mindstorm NXT?
Me and my brother want to make a robot Using Lego Mindstorm NXT. It will be built for racing so it needs to be fast and have good turning.
Any Ideas?
The speed of a vehicle is affected by a number of factors: motor power, gear ratio, mass and friction.
As for motor power: since, there is only one kind of motor in Mindstorm NXT, use as many motors as allowed. You can use two motors for traction and one for steering. Also you should use fresh batteries.
As for the gear ratio and mass, which have a strong influence on the acceleration rate of your vehicle I have some tips:
The shorter the gear, the shorter the time it takes to reach the maximum speed, The problem is that a short gear also has low top speed. You have to balance the two effects. Build your robot in a way that allows easy replacement of the gear so you can experiment.
The diameter of the wheels has its role in the conversion of power to speed, bigger wheels more speed less power.
Acceleration is also influenced negatively by the mass you have to move under the same power. Build a lightweight structure.
For good turning use a differential gear for connecting the traction wheels and Ackerman steering for the Steering Wheels.
