Why does Princess Leia’s mother dress like a Geisha?

George Lucas used a lot of international and cross-cultural ideas in his films, and he seems to have drawn a lot of inspiration from Japan. For example, a good portion of the Jedi (characters, belief system, practices, etc.) is drawn from samurai traditions. Darth Vader‘s helmet was designed based on samurai helmets. Using white makeup and Asian-inspired outfits for Padme and the other Naboo royalty is just another example of Lucas borrowing ideas and inspiration from Japan and the rest of Asia. Additionally, the white makeup helps add an air of mystery to the characters who wear it, and makes it much easier for Padme (and probably her predecessors and successors) to have other women with similar but not identical features act as decoys.

Leia was raised on Alderaan, which obviously has a very different culture than Naboo, and since culture is learned rather than passed down through blood of course she would use the clothing, hair, and makeup styles common to where she was raised.
