How does the Emergency Broadcast System work on a Digital signal?
I lose reception on my Dish when it storms, analog always worked for weather radar. I live in Oklahoma, how am I supposed to see the Tornadoes coming? Will FEMA let me know before or after my house lands in Kansas? We just had a large storm roll thru, glad Istill had a choice with the computer.
The Emergency Alert System (EAS) works the same weather it’s analog or digital. It’s just audio. The alerts are carried by TV, Radio and NOAA Weather Radio stations. FEMA doesn’t really have anything to do with EAS, it’s all on The National Weather Service (NOAA) and your local government.
I would suggest purchasing a low cost weather radio with alert. It will turn itself on automatically so you will get whatever alerts are sent, even if your conventional TV or radio is turned off or your power is out. Here are some examples: http://www.weatherradiostore.com/subcategory.asp?cat=1&subcat=404583
BTW, we haven’t used the Emergency Broadcast System (EBS) since the 90s. There are also some modifications to EAS that are in the works, however the government hasn’t decided on standards yet so nobody can make the equipment!
EDIT: Classicsat, the data is NOT digitally embedded in anything, yet. That’s what the proposal is, but the standards have not been written as of NAB last month so this is NOT implemented. Currently it’s just audio. That’s how my plant is set up!
