Red Town

Red Town
Is New Haven, CT a town Red Sox or Yankees / Mets people?

I know New Haven is located in New England, but is closer to New York after Boston. By the way, my father family is Putnam, Connecticut (a city Sox) and Hartford (mostly Boston fans, but a lot Yankees fan).

I lived there and is a Sports Town in New York, the Passenger Train to New Haven is the city of New York for New Yorkers have easier access then Bostonians do to New Haven. Yankees / Mets city here.

Wild West lives in California ghost towns

The Wild West and the mining of the 1800s are a rich part of the heritage of California, and what better way to travel in the past to visit the ghost towns of California? The Golden State ghost towns more about the ghost story, and you spend hours exploring all corners of sometimes dusty old buildings in various states of deterioration and restoration. Here are two different examples to get started.

Indiana

Only on the unit time in Los Angeles to Las Vegas gets a bit tedious, to come to Interstate 15 at the exit of the ghost town of Calico – worth making a stop that will give the opportunity to stretch their legs and get to know the history of California, at the same time.

This is a true ghost town, but not the kind of fear and really more an amusement park as a historic dig. Some of the original town has been restored, some built new buildings and some created especially for tourists. The city was carved into the colorful hills of the Mojave Desert in 1881 and again today offers a fascinating glimpse of what life might have been for the borax miners 19th century silver.

If Calico seems in some places a bit as part of Knott's Berry Farm, it is because Calico was once owned by Walter Knott, founder of the park popular attractions. He gave the San Bernardino property in 1966 and has since become a regional park complete with its own history and many buildings and authentic furniture. Mixed the story is a good deal of business – from restaurants to souvenir shops gift shops – that caters to the busloads of tourists who find a comfortable way This half-stop service between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

This ghost town is dusty and dirty to the less developed areas that still have dirt roads and sagebrush down by the city. The streets are paved trails are well marked and each have historical displays descriptions to help you have a idea of what he sees. The surrounding hills provide a scenic environment and begin to realize this place was called Calico for a reason, in blue, red, gray, green, vermilion, brown and yellow can be seen in patches along the steep slopes.

Like most ghost towns, Calico was once a lively place where seekers come to seek their riches in the mines. Both silver and borax were taken from more than 500 local mines. This made it possible for the city grow to more than 1,200 people and support to many local businesses – including 22 classrooms. When the price of silver was reduced to half day city had more than hay and residents eventually moved away.

We spent a couple of hours in Calico, where Main Street is a pleasant walk from the best four city blocks, each filled historical attractions, shopping and surprises. For example, you can visit the prison of Calico, Calico where gunmen took courage to serve time. There is a center visitors, including vintage photographs, historical newspapers and explanatory materials to help you understand the history of the city. There is a place to do something gold washing and another called the House of Mystery – as one might expect from a man named Knotts. Plan to have lunch in the Hall of Lil – fantasy nothing to eat here but just beyond those doors swinging saloon is a bar that seems out of a Hollywood western. And, yes, families are welcome.

There is no real playground fun, but there is a train of coal can be mounted on a short loop to get a history lesson of the engineer of the train. We also enjoy going re-created in a mine shaft where you can get an idea of the darkness and claustrophobia of the mountain – and do so safely. There is a house made of bottles and various other oddities are fun to come through. You see the houses of the miners carved into the hillsides, and a variety of old buildings standing freestyle West.

If you have need a little more help imagine what the Wild West was really like, today the city "gunmen" to force the shoot-outs and demonstrations on Main Street.

The Calico Ghost Town is just northeast of Barstow, and because we were visiting in the afternoon, we decided to spend the night. We were pleasantly surprised the accommodation available in the new Holiday Inn Express, which offers amazing luxury and a general feeling that was modern and nice, with magnificent views desert out the window.

If you are traveling by RV, Calico offers camping right on the park property.

Bodie

If you are looking for a California ghost town is a bit less commercial the state has helped restore the town of Bodie in the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. This will be a little harder to reach and require a lot more on foot. But worthwhile.

If you thought the underwater shots of the Titanic were both disturbing and fascinating, Bodie gives you the same feeling. Just like you imagined what life Must Have been in the last hours of the fateful maiden voyage of the Titanic tragedy, a look inside the many buildings that remain in Bodie move to reflect on how life was during those years ago in the 1880s when Bodie bustled than 10,000 souls.

In 1859, it was found gold near this city for S. Waterman Body and the common people paid tribute to the body by naming the town after him with a slight variation: The Residents were concerned that the Council would decide how to write so they changed the spelling to Bodie.

As mining in the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada went into decline, miners crossed the mountains to search for other sources of gold and, soon, with the discovery of deposits such as the famed Comstock Lode at Virginia City, this whole area east of the mountains began to emerge with the arrival of the miners.

By all accounts, was wild, strident kind of existence during the 1880s as miners and other residents were delivered in the 65 classrooms that had sprung up throughout the city. Murders were said to be an almost daily occurrence. According to the park service, Bodie was also the scene of many robberies, muggings and street fights stage. Along Bonanza Street, Maiden Lane and Virgin Alley, ladies of the night to create a row of cottages in a room called "cribs."

Having read all the stories about Bodie, we were prepared to see what remained of the city and its colorful past. The road to Bodie is clearly marked in the U.S. 395 south of Bridgeport, and our anticipation grew with each of the 13 miles of winding. Along the way we saw in our rear view mirrors of the panoramic views of the mountains became more and more spectacular as up closer to the elevation of 8,300 feet Bodie's.

Then in the top of the grade and just around the corner, there was Bodie. From a distance was not seen as an entire city but a lot of chance outside of buildings spread over a few modest hills. Then, as he approached, the buildings began to take shape – a church and a steeple on the edge of town, some very well-preserved houses, and then a small number of large buildings on the street main appeared to have been built for a Western movie – except this was the real thing. This was a real town where real cowboys were real shootings.

Perhaps it is because we are more accustomed to visiting many false film and western cities, but somehow they were not ready for our first look at one of these buildings – which proved the old Methodist Church. There, covered by a thick layer of dust, were hand-carved pews, pulpit and an ornate pipe organ. It seemed that with just a little scrubbing, this church may be ready to accommodate a congregation on Sunday.

And that's when the effect Titanic began to kick in. We had come to see the buildings of a city that had its hay day over a hundred years ago, but somehow that was not realized this historic park was much more than a collection of buildings – many of the buildings are, in fact, mini-museums still housing the artifacts of the time. In some cases, it appears that the residents got up and left only one day, but take nothing with them.

For more information about Bodie Historical Park State, call 760-647-6445 or visit www.parks.ca.gov. Online, you can also visit www.bodie.com, where the Friends of Bodie to offer many more details about the city.
