A foot or so from where that torpedo and sunk us! But that torpedo a brace, and that energy absorbed corset and prevented us from flying. "

"I survived the attack aircraft, but the worst was yet to come, as five torpedo boats were to us, with one thing in mind, and we would put at the bottom. Only one hit the target. This was the second miracle that I was exposed to that day, the first is the survivor of the offensive jets.
"The torpedo struck almost amidships Freedom in the starboard side, and I was about thirty meters from the explosion. There were a couple of bulkheads between the explosion, and myself, but they were like paper to several tons of TNT that broke the bowels of Liberty. What had been several compartments became in a large room in a very short time. He was immediately immersed in sea water and was rising rapidly to the point where it would be over my head quickly and although the swim, the compartment completely fills early, and there is no place to go. The hatch cover was closed and tenacious top down, and so my life again depended completely on what God would do.
