Darjeeling Himalayan Train

Franklin Prestage, the agent of the eastern Bengal railway formulated the plan of Darjeeling Railway in 1878 and the construction of the railway line was completed in 1881. It is called the Toy Train because of its miniature size and its movement at a snails pace. The leisure trip on Darjeeling Toy Train is a treat to a eye as it covers so may beautiful places. Darjeeling Toy Train was conferred the World Heritage Status in 1999. It was the second railway line in the world to be declared as the UNESCO Heritage site.

West Bengal Railway Authorities have decided to increase its speed by two hours. The distance that the train covers in eight to nine hours, would now be covered in six hours. The Indian Railway roughly spends Rs 10 crore anually on the running and upkeep of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. The train presents the glory of the old world charm. It has ferried millions of tourists till date. The train still maintains its quaintness with wood compartments and no brakes. The engineering marvel used by the Darjeeling Himalayan Train was inspirational for several mountain railways in the world. This narrow gauge stream railway plies its way from siliguri in the plains up to the Ghoom and Darjeeling in the hills. Sukna, Rong Tong, Tindharia,, Gayabari, Mahanadi, Kurseong, Tung, Sonada, Ghoom are the stations covered by the train.

Tea Garden sightseeing : You can simple lean on the train window, feel the cool wind blowing over the face and watch the familiar green expanses of the tea gardens. Witness the Tea estate labours working hard in the gardens plucking the tea leaves. You can take a walk along these numerous Tea gardens. As this place has many boarding schools, so you can enchant with the school children coming from the school. You will get the spectacular view of the Kanchenjunga the third highest mountain in the world from the famous Batasia Loop.

You can easily kill the time watching the beautiful plantations of the white orchids or you can also spend time gazing at the snow covered mountains. It provides the views that are truly dramatic. Passing through the streets you may find number of shops selling warm woolly sweaters. You can also take the sip of the cinnamon Masala Tea. You may converse with the people in villages who are very friendly by the nature.
