Need a Isuzu Trooper Expert.?

I’ve had this 1987 Isuzu Trooper II, 2.3L 4×4, 5 speed. For several years, it worked fine, then started going rough, haven’t been able to figure it out, when i first got it 4 years ago, I replaced the carb, gas tank, coil, distributor cap, plugs& wires, It ran great for about a year, then stopped running right, parked it for 2 years, decided to get it going again, replaced the carb again, plugs, wires, but it doesn’t seem like its firing on a cylinder, it runs but rough, perhaps the distributor is bad? Can the coil go bad and make it run rough? I replaced the timing belt, tried to make sure everything was still lined up right, I dont want to sink 1000 dollars into it. I will probably end up replacing things one by one hoping it works. Any ideas? Suggestions? (setting it on fire sounds good) but seriously if there is a isuzu expert, can give me a tip or something to check on, that would be wonderful.

I don’t think you should set it on fire, that would be bad for the environment. Personally, I think the best, most useful, new function for any Isuzu is as an artificial reef at the bottom of a very deep body of water.

In a previous century I owned an ’87 Trooper II and an even-worse ’91 Rodeo (I’m a slow learner, apparently. Must Have been dropped on my head as a child). In truth, many things went wrong on my Isuzus….

There are a couple of obvious things to look at:
a)you’ve already mentioned the distributor.
b)a dying fuel pump (typical of the breed) or clogged fuel filter (if you’re lucky).
c)a cracked intake manifold. Unlike a fuel injection system, carbs cannot compensate for this and the engine runs lean.
d)Another typical problem area is gaskets: has the coolant level been dropping ? if yes, coolant may actually be leaking into one of the combustion chambers. This particular problem is a b*tch to diagnose without pulling the head. Basically, Isuzu had a batch of bad head gaskets which allows a minuscule internal coolant leak. The coolant goes straight into one of the combustion chambers, but there isn’t enough of it at any time to smoke appreciably. The only clue is a misteriously diminishing coolant level, until eventually enough crud accumulates in the affected combustion chamber to choke-off that cylinder, especially at lower rpm. It took 3 visits to my long-suffering dealer before the problem was finally diagnosed and fixed.
