Beginners Guide to Caravanning – Types of Caravans
The traditional caravan that we can all recall seeing on the British roads through the summer is the UK built singe-axle ‘van, which usually sleeps between two and six people. Larger caravans tend to weigh more and therefore have twin axles. Although the main manufacturers, such as Bailer, Swift and the Explorer Group, are based in the UK, there are also many imports from Europe and America. If you’re considering a foreign import, it’s worth checking that the width of the ‘van is not more than the UK maximum of 2.3 metres, otherwise it may be illegal to tow on the UK’s roads. It’s also worth checking with a few caravan insurance companies as they can sometimes be more difficult to insure.
An alternative to the traditional caravan is a folding camper. These can be easier to tow as they fold down into a trailer. Once on site, they can be folded out to the size of a standard caravan and provide a spacious living area with all the equipment you need. One downside to a folding camper is the time it takes to erect the camper on arrival and fold it down when you’re ready to move on. With a normal caravan, you could have the kettle on and your feet up!
If it’s something compact you’re after, the tiny teardrop trailers prove popular with those with smaller towing vehicles. They are made by a number of manufacturers with models such as the Bedbug, the Danbury Tear Drop and The Pod. Due to their small size, accommodation is basic and more suited to occasional short breaks with just enough room for a double bed and some basic kitchen equipment.
Pop-top caravans are still a good buy, with their lower roof line, they can be more economical to tow. The head-height can be increased by ‘popping the top’ and lifting the roof providing ample living space and good levels of equipment.
America is becoming more influential in the caravan market with the introduction of European specification Airstream Silver Bullet caravans. These fashionable looking caravans are proving popular with the younger generations and even celebrities.
If you’re in the market for a caravan, take a look at your options and there’s bound to be one to suit your requirements. Once you’ve chosen your new caravan, don’t forget to safeguard your pride and joy with an appropriate caravan insurance policy.

10 point for the first correct answer. Can you figure out my riddle?
Oak and hazel are my aunts,
though I am not their kin.
My cousin grows in pod on vine;
I often have a twin.
My shape is like the sands of time
contained within a glass.
I have no legs, instead a shell;
I dwell beneath the grass.
answer #1 has it — this was too easy I will have to look for harder ones next time!! Have a Good night – I will give the points tomorrow!!
