The revised version antique here is a high quality hard bound book in large format, beautifully decorated and pages with frames, high quality paper and printing text and images, mostly real photo and includes color reproductions of sixteen pages of Civil War paintings. Editing and production are impeccable; a modern word processing program could not have done better.
This book has 260 pages of text and 317 photographs and images, and prints the color of sixteen.
Comments:
Do not be fooled by the title, which is not a book illustrated, when loaded with hundreds of fascinating photographs. Published nearly 50 years after the end of the Civil War, the author creates a complete history of the war convincing textual style and content, and hundreds of actual photographs.
The author, Henry Elson, had a lot of factual records to research, and digest, and had the advantage of living and writing at a time when the Civil War was still part of living history in the minds of many people, including veterans on both sides.
This is a complete history of the Civil War from the start, end, with all the horror, in the middle. And the whole story becomes even more alive by the accompanying photographs.
You do not have to know any Civil War history to read this book, this book will teach the reader, and that no modern book on the causes and conduct of the war. This book tells the story of the Civil War not only a matter of fact, an approach meaningless, but also from a perspective unique to humans, in dramatic prose.
Since this book was written more than 86 years, most people notice that the text style, prose, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc., are somewhat different from our expectations today. (This is true of history many antiquarian books of the day). The effect is to provide a pleasant and interesting snapshot of a day and time, from 1912, when the prose was often shamelessly exciting and dramatic. Although the subject is about the horror and misery of war, you will find yourself smiling at the common use of words and phrases we think of as having more of a dramatic exaggeration, it seems a bit corny, sometimes, by our modern world, but on that day, was quite common, and, regardless, it adds another level of enjoyment.
For example, the following quotations are just two examples of many common phrases dramatically throughout the book: (As you read this, I can almost audience to imagine a drum roll as war descends on the earth.)
In the field of Shiloh, for the first time, two great armies United States were to participate in a powerful struggle to live up to the most important in the annals of Europe. And the trouble was that contestants were brothers of the same house, no hereditary and implacable enemies.
or, another example:
A battery arson on the cliff poured into their ranks. Gallantly attacking columns withstood the deluge of hail of lead and went up the creek. Some of the most aggressive reached the opposite shore, but was severe rejection.
The fact that this book was published in 1912 does not compromise the integrity of facts. I read modern versions, and this version, and there is no lack of historical facts. In fact, I'm sure modern works depend heavily on works like this book. Instead of putting just the cold hard facts of the Civil War, this book offers more an insider view of the war, emotion filled with tales of slaughter and destruction and death, and deprivation and hatred and cruelty and pain, are balanced by tales of honor, chivalry, kindness, and humanity, and morality and patriotism.
I am a history buff, I am particularly interested in U.S. history was, of various ancient books in American history I've read, this is a superb original work I'm sure that has been the basis of many stories after the Civil War.
This book is compelling reading. The historical content is unmatched, and while the format is similar to a textbook, reads more like a novel, and it is difficult to stop once they have started to read it. Even if you are an expert in the Civil War, and have read many books about the war, I think you will find that you will gain a new perspective on the war in reading and studying this book. And if you're not an expert, you'll be on your way to the end bell experts this book.
This is a perfect candidate for conversion to a multimedia e-book. The theme, design, text, prose, photographs, and any additional resources available Civil War, are the ideal components of an enhanced multimedia e-book.
If this book were a movie, I would rate PG, mostly because of the photographs, and because the prose can be a little difficult for younger children at primary school age.
In a scale of 1-10, this book is a 10.
