A History of the Boer War
During the seventeenth century a mixture of Dutch, German and French Calvinists emigrated to South Africa to farm and worship in the manner in which they wished. The word Boer originally meant farmer. The new arrivals settled in Cape Colony which was under British Authority, the Boers felt that the British were too intrusive in their affairs especially when slavery was outlawed and blacks were allowed to own land. As a result, the Boers embarked on The Great Trek in 1836, leaving Cape Colony and journeying deep into the interior. They settled in what became known as the Orange Free State and the Transvaal. They were granted their independence by the British government after a short war in 1881. These Boer Republics became extremely wealthy, especially after the discovery of gold in Witwaterstrand in 1886. This caused an influx of British capital mining expertise and immigrants, the Boers called the latter Uitlanders and refused them the vote and taxed them heavily. In turn, the Uitlanders, centred mainly in Johannesburg, formed the Reform Movement in an attempt to ameliorate these conditions. Cecil Rhodes threw his full weight behind the movement, he wished to seize the valuable mineral deposits in the Boer Republics and the Orange Free State was blocking his dream of a railway that would stretch from Cairo to the Cape. Rhodes in collaboration with the Colonial Secretary Joseph Chamberlain planned a Uitlander revolt which would be supported by an unofficial British force overthrowing President Kruger’s government and seizing the area for Britain.
Subsequently, a small force of 470 men led by Dr. Jameson invaded the Transvaal but the Uitlander revolt failed to materialise and the small force was decimated. However, Chamberlain continued to support the Uitlanders and when Kruger refused Chamberlain’s requests for improvements, the British popular press began a campaign to prepare the public for war to liberate the Uitlanders. Of course, the immense wealth of the region made the British all the more determined to add the territory to their empire. The Boers still confident after their repelling of the Jameson raid began importing large caches of arms and launched their attack in November 1899. The Boer army totalled only 70,000 and was a civilian one, they faced a British force of almost half a million. But the Boers were fighting in familiar territory, were fighting to preserve their way of life and were led by skilled commanders such as Louis Botha, Christian de Wet, Jan Smuts and J.B. Herzog whereas the British forces lacked co-ordination and their commander-in-chief General Buller proved inadequate. So initially, the Boers scored a number of successes but the British rallied forcing the Boers to embark on a guerrilla campaign. To combat these new tactics, Britain instigated a scorched earth policy and established concentration camps causing a Liberal outcry to stop the war. In May 1902, both sides were ready to make peace and a treaty was signed at Vereeniging. Under the Treaty, the Transvaal and the Orange Free State were incorporated into the British Empire with the promise that they would be eventually granted self-government (which occurred in 1907). In addition, a grant of three million pounds and low interest loans was given to the Boers to aid resettlement and provide necessities.
