Why is there a hole in the Werewolf: The Wild West book?

Okay, I’m kind of a fan of the old World of Darkness games. The other day I found a copy of Werewolf: The Wild West at Half Price Bookstore. There’s a hole that runs from cover to cover and through the pages. At first I thought some bubble-head just drilled a hole in the book, but the hole’s too clean and the words in the pages wrap around the hole; it was clearly put there by the publishers. The book itself doesn’t seem to make any reference to it. Dose anyone know why the hole is there? Is it decorative; is it supposed to look like a bullet hole or something? Was there something strung through it originally?

That’s a die-cut “bullet-hole”. It also doesn’t look very much like a bullet-hole, but that’s what it’s supposed to be.
